I’m reminded of a story…
There was a lonely Greek sculptor who lived a decent life. He was moderately prosperous in his business, and had never suffered any devastating calamities. He generally considered himself to be a lucky man. Considering himself affably blessed by the Gods, he decided to carve a votive statue to them. There was only one thing he missed in his life, a woman, a wife. He wished more than anything to find a wife, a woman he could share his life with. It was fitting therefore that for his votive statue, he decided to carve the most beautiful woman out of the purest white marble. She was so beautiful, that when he finished sculpting her, he fell madly in love. Not being able to stand the thought of her beautiful form being exposed to the elements, he dedicated her to the shrine inside his own house. While she stood beside his homes’ shrine he treated her as if she was a living, breathing woman, and was completely devoted to her. He offered her food, wine, clothing, the most expensive jewelry he could afford, even celebrated her birthday. Of course this love was the source of his misery as well, as it was one-sided and could not be returned by the cold marble statue. So he prayed, he prayed to the Gods to give her life and mortal flesh, because he had been so pious and loyal to the Gods by dedicating that very statue to their honour. He begged that his one humble request would be granted, so he could fully live the happy life he so longed for.
Now, the Gods don’t always listen to every prayer from everyone, but on that day the Greek was fortunate, because his prayer was heard and the Gods were moved by the depth and passion of his love, and how true was his desire to marry her.
Before his very eyes, the statue which he so lovingly crafted was enveloped with the warm glow of humanity, and the warmth of blood, and eyes which could finally see the man whom the soul within had grown to love.

Could the wishful heart grant a soul to an object so beloved?
Could her pirate truly come to life?
